Hyperbaric oxygen therapy heals diabetic wounds

چکیده
With the increasing prevalence of diabetes in the community, morbidity and mortality as a result of diabetic feet has been increasing. Foot complications are one of the most serious and yet preventable complications of diabetes mellitus having an economic impact to the individual and adding the burden to the already inadequate healthcare resources. Complications associated with diabetes are often expensive to treat, and commonly include foot ulceration. While most diabetic foot ulcers heal with standard treatment, when standard treatment measures fail, adjunctive therapies must be considered. Use of systemic Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) as an adjunctive treatment for chronic lower extremity diabetic ulceration is safe, reasonable and cost effective modality. HBOT in diabetic wounds has confirmed its role in promoting oxygenation; enhance immune mechanisms, neovascular formation, fibroblast proliferation and other beneficial actions. It is now accepted as a useful adjunctive treatment in a select group of diabetic patients with severe or limb threatening wounds. HBOT has been demonstrated to be an effective treatment when combined with careful attention to underlying diseases and wound care including debridement, grafting, and control of infection. This article discusses the role of oxygen in wound healing, and place of HBOT in the modern multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of diabetic foot wounds. Counterpoint: hyperbaric oxygen for diabetic foot wounds is not effective.
BACKGROUND Diabetic foot ulceration is common, affecting 1.0%-4.1% of diabetic persons per year and up to 25% in a lifetime. Diabetic foot ulcers are multifactorial in origin, and many are slow to heal and/or are complicated by infection, frequently leading to amputation. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has been suggested for numerous indications, and it is recognized by funding agencies for a smalle...
متن کاملHyperbaric oxygen therapy for diabetic foot ulcers.
Foot ulcers are a common and devastating complication of diabetes. Many patients with diabetic foot ulcers experience significant disability and ultimately require amputation. Despite attentive management with multiple modalities including surgical debridement, relief of pressure, and other standard measures, many diabetic foot ulcers persist as chronic, nonhealing wounds. Hyperbaric oxygen (HB...

INTRODUCTION Hyperbaric oxygen and platelet-rich plasma are used in the treatment of diabetic wounds. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of hyperbaric oxygen therapy and autologous platelet concentrates in healing diabetic wounds. MATERIAL AND METHODS Thirty-six female Wistar albino rats were used in this study. Diabetes mellitus was induced chemically with an intraperitoneal in...

Few topics in diabetic wound management generate as much "heated" discussion as hyperbaric oxygen (HBO). Hyperbaric oxygen is an intermittent inhalation therapy in which the patient breathes oxygen at greater than 1 atm of pressure. This requires placement of the patient into a sealed vessel (chamber) which is capable of withstanding pressurization. This article discusses the role of HBO as an ...

Diabetic Ulcers Heal Faster With Hyperbaric Oxygen Diabetes is a disease that affects the small blood vessels in the tissues which results in wounds or ulcers that may last months to years. These wounds often develop from incidental injuries to the body and may become infected which can spread to the deeper tissues and the bones and may even require amputation. HBOT can help heal these wounds f...
